2007 SUMMARY

Liam & his sister Chloe

During the summer of 2006, the partnership L & S Devaney was formed. The ring number DEV5 was purchased from the budgerigar society and the new birdroom was hastily constructed (see our set up!) then on completion we set out to purchase the foundation stock, which hopefully would set us on our way. Birds were purchased from Chris Snell, Gren & Pat Norris, John Heald and Phil White. We would like to thank those breeders for their help and advice, and in some cases birds that were gratefully given to us.
At the end of November, Chris Snell assisted with the pairing up of the birds, nest boxes were placed and the waiting started. Soon we had our first egg, then shortly after, nine out of the twelve pairs were sitting of full eggs! Towards the end of December, chicks started to hatch and the place was buzzing with the sound of feeding chicks, in total ninety chicks were reared with one pair, a grey green cock from Gren & Pat Norris and an opaline sky spangle hen from Chris Snell. This pair produced 13 good quality youngsters that we had high hopes for, both on the show bench and later on in the breeding cages, These were in cage number twelve and have therefore come to be known as line 12.
During May our first show team was put together and were prepared over the next few weeks. In June, our first show arrived, and we set off for the Doncaster BS open show. the birds were checked in and the judging started. Whilst assisting with the stewarding, one eye was kept on the progress of our birds. The spangle cc line up was being judged, and one of our young spangles was slowly moving up the line, a few moments of sweaty palms followed, and eventually our young grey green spangle cock was placed third by Phil Reaney, a blue dot was placed on the cage and being new kids on the block we had no idea what that represented, so after the judging was complete, we asked Phil and to our amazement we had the best young spangle in show. Buzzing! In total 5 shows were attended, including the Budgerigar Society club show with the following results

Doncaster BS

2nd best beginner young bird
Best spangle young bird

Lincoln B&FBS

2nd best beginner young bird
Best spangle young bird

Cleethorpes B&FBS

Best beginner young bird
3rd best beginner young bird

Lincolnshire & East Anglia BS

Best beginner young bird

Budgerigar Society Club Show

Best beginner green series spangle young bird
Best beginner opaline cinnamon young bird

Following the BS club show, the process of which birds were to be retained started, all the birds reared by the pair mentioned earlier were retained automatically, and then the best of the rest pulled out. The remaining birds were sold off to raise funds for future purchases.
Potential pairings were drawn up on paper, and it was decided to re-pair the original 'pair 12' and to use the grey green spangle cock, that had done well on the show bench for us this season, along with his brother which is a dark green spangle and with three sisters, two cobalt spangles and a grey green to form the main pairs for 2008. Closely related birds were brought from the studs of Norris & Snell to pair back to these birds.
